Sponsors of a bill meant to protect Maryland children from privacy and other concerns related to social media said Thursday they believe the new law will survive what they expect will be a likely challenge in federal court.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed two measures into law on Thursday that are aimed at better protecting personal data online from Big Tech, including a bill making Maryland the second state to try to create strong limits on information collected on children.

Maryland Kids Code, a bill that will require social media companies to do more to safeguard kids, will be signed into law by Gov. Wes Moore (D) on Thursday in Annapolis.

State lawmakers are incorporating lessons learned from a lawsuit challenging a California kids’ online safety law to strengthen their own bills against constitutional challenges.
